Krin Gabbard, Charles Hersch and Ken Prouty – Jazz and National Identities
This roundtable will focus on some of the ways we might think about national identities, representations and stereotypes in jazz. In particular, we concentrate on how nationalist myths and social practices intersect with, and challenge conventional accounts of jazz history. Some of the questions we aim to address are:
– In what ways does jazz mediate different national identities?
– Is there a place in jazz scholarship for a transnational or global history of jazz?
– What are the critical issues facing jazz scholars outside the United States?
